The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra returns to The Anvil and the concert begins with Beethoven’s Pastoral symphony written from his own love of the Austrian countryside. The five movements include a solitary walk by a brook, a peasants' dance, a spectacular summer thunderstorm, and a final, tranquil hymn of thanksgiving.

This is followed by Shostakovich's early concerto for piano and trumpet, an exuberant and high-spirited piece, which combines both instruments in ingenious and witty dialogue with the orchestra and each other.

The final piece of the evening is The Firebird, which was Stravinsky's first big success. It is a richly coloured ballet score based on a Russian folk tale in which the young prince overcomes a demon with the protection of a feather from the fabled firebird.

The soloists are Martin James Bartlett on piano and Paul Bosworth on trumpet.  The conductor is Elena Schwarz.
