Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at The Anvil on Wednesday 25 February

British conductor Robin Ticciati conducts Mozart's bold, stormy and divine final trilogy of symphonies when he joins the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at The Anvil on Wednesday 25 February.

Through the summer of 1788 Mozart was consumed in a burst of inspiration. The result was the three remarkable symphonies that turned out to be his last. They make a satisfying triptych, with the relatively serene no. 39 contrasting with the more agitated and unsettled no. 40. The final symphony sums up Mozart's achievement in the form and is a five-part tour de force of pure joy.

The exact purpose for composing the trio of symphonies, like so much with Mozart, remains something of a mystery. One theory is that he intended them to be new-style ‘Grand Symphonies’ as the centrepieces for future concerts he was planning. They are grand in tone and scale for the time, and reflect an invincible spirit and optimistic drive that inspired Mozart to continue creating brilliant music, despite the gloomy personal circumstances he faced.

Tickets for this concert are priced at £46, £42, £35, £27, £18. Under 25s and f/t students £12 (includes £4 booking fee). For more information visit anvilarts.org.uk, or call the Anvil Arts box office on 01256 844244.
