Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

The Anvil, Basingstoke
Tuesday 20 January 2026
7.30pm start

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment return to The Anvil on Tuesday 20 January, conducted by Kati Debretzeni and joined by Katherine Spencer on clarinet, for a programme that includes Mozart’s last orchestral work, the Clarinet Concerto, alongside his most enduringly popular serenade for strings, Eine kleine Nachtmusik.

The concert begins with Arriaga’s Overture in F minor Op. 1 (1817). The Basque composer was a child prodigy, dubbed 'the Spanish Mozart' at the time, who composed a number of accomplished quartets and symphonies before his untimely death at only 19 years old. This dramatic overture is the first piece he published.

This is followed by the Clarinet Concerto by Mozart, written for his friend, the great clarinettist, Anton Stadler. The slow movement is particularly serene and beautiful.

Michael Haydn was Josef's brother and a successful composer in his own right. This delightful divertimento in G (1780) is typical of his accomplished style.

The lively and charming Eine kleine Nachtmusik, another popular and familiar work by Mozart, closes the concert.

Tickets are priced at £46, £42, £35, £27, £18. Under 25s and f/t students £12 (includes £4 booking fee). For more information visit the Anvil Arts website, or call the Anvil Arts box office on 01256 844244.
