The Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra will be in Basingstoke at The Anvil. The programme includes Sibelius’ Symphony no. 7. The composer’s last symphony absorbs the traditional four movements into a single, fascinating arch of music. Each section grows out of the previous one, developing to make a truly organic whole.
Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 21 is his most familiar. It begins with a stealthy march which develops in many directions. The heart of the work is a slow movement of great beauty, and it ends with a riotous, comic-opera finale.
Brahms’ Symphony no. 1 took him years to write, but the result of his struggle is one of his most dramatic and fulfilling works.
Pianist Yeol Eum Son joins the orchestra. She is in high demand as recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician. Over the past decade, Eum has achieved global acclaim not least for her interpretations of Mozart's piano concertos.
The conductor is Yutaka Sado. Born in Kyoto, Music Director of the Tonkunstler Orchestra since the start of the 2015/16 season, he is considered one of the most important Japanese conductors of our time.
