Crabtree Plantation
Crabtree Plantation
Crabtree Plantation is a wonderful wooded and open parkland that was once part of the historic Hackwood Estate. Crabtree retains its heritage through features like the Bolton Arch. The site includes mixed woodland—oak, horse chestnut, sycamore, and ash—and is interlaced with informal footpaths.
Its south-facing grassland, managed for flowering plants, and diverse habitat make it an important site for butterflies, particularly the rare White-letter Hairstreak, which relies on the elm trees for breeding and resting.
Why we love it:
- Free parking on-site.
- Walking trails take you to Black Dam Ponds.
- Fantastic views of the town centre.
