We thought that World Book Day would be a great opportunity to highlight local book clubs and ways to connect with fellow book and story lovers. We’ve gathered some great options for you – take a look below!
Book Clubs
The Book Club Basingstoke meet every second Thursday of the month at the Duck and Tipple on Wote Street. They start at 7.30pm and finish at approximately 9.30pm. Expect a warm welcoming space to share your passion. Also, in the town centre find a book club in Waterstones on the first Friday of the month. It starts at 6pm.
If you live in the Kempshott or Beggarwood area of the borough then you are well located for The Beggarwood Bookworms which meet in the Café in the Park once a month. They are often joined by an author to talk about their book.
There are two reading groups that meet at Tadley Library. One on the first Thursday of the month from 2pm to 4pm and the other on the third Tuesday of the month at the same time.
Combine a love of books with the enjoyment of sampling delicious puddings at Basingstoke Book and Pudding Club which runs at Bartons Mill. It runs the first Monday of the month from 7.30pm till 9pm.
The Silent Book Club meets one Saturday a month – visit their Instagram page for dates for 2026. They spend the first half an hour socialising and grabbing drinks or food then move onto an hour of silent reading before finishing with a discussion about what they read. The location varies each month, it’s free to attend and it’s up to you what you read.
If you are a member of the U3a there are plenty of opportunities to join a book club. They have a group that meets the fourth Monday of the month at Kempshott Village Hall and one that meets the day after at Brookvale Village Hall. There is also a group that meets at Tadley Library the fourth Thursday of the month.
Storytime
Storytime is a great way to introduce little ones to books and the local libraries run a number of storytime events throughout the week. You can also borrow some books whilst you are there! Parents with under-fives might enjoy Storytime at Basingstoke Discovery Centre which runs every Friday (excluding bank holidays) from 10.30am to 11am. Storytime for children aged three to five runs at Chineham library every Tuesday and they run a story and craft session on a Saturday morning which combines a story with a book themed craft activity. Storytime runs at Tadley Library on a Thursday morning and Whitchurch every Saturday.
But storytime isn’t just for kids. Adults can relax, sit back and listen to the library staff at the Discovery Centre read aloud to them. Enjoy classic and modern stories in a warm and welcome space every Thursday lunchtime.
Book related events
For other book or story related events keep an eye on the Waterstones' Facebook page. They sometimes get authors popping in promoting their new books or run events to mark anniversaries.
Writing
If you have a passion for creative writing and like to try your own hand at writing stories then Write Club - Creative Writing is held at Basingstoke Discovery Centre every third Wednesday of the month. New members are welcome at this supportive group for writers of all genres and abilities.
The U3a also has a Creative Writing group for members that runs at Oakridge Hall for All. This one is obviously popular as they have a waiting list at the moment!
