Five picture perfect places in Basingstoke and Deane

From the award-winning gin distillery Bombay Sapphire and places of historic interest such as The Vyne, Basingstoke and Deane is full of photogenic spots to make memories and capture photos to look back on long after the day is over.

If you're looking for inspiration for your next day out, here are five places we love to visit with a camera in hand.

1.    Scenic spring shots on the Overton Jane Austen Trails

The Overton Jane Austen trails are enjoyable all year around but a beautiful time of year to be walking in the footsteps of Jane Austen is spring, when the daffodils are blooming, bluebells colour the woods at Ashe Park, lambs dot the fields at the site of Steventon Rectory and you can hear birdsong along the River Test. There really is something magical about the countryside during the spring months.

The trails were created to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth, and provide walking and cycle trails through the footpaths and bridleways of Overton, Steventon and the surrounding countryside. Perfect for taking a moment to slow down and discover the landscapes and nature around you.

After enjoying the trails, take time to explore the charming village of Overton, where you'll find shops, cafés, traditional pubs and cosy spots for drinks, light bites or main meals.

2.    Watch the summer sunset from Beacon Hill

For some of the most breathtaking views in Basingstoke and Deane, head to Beacon Hill, an impressive hillfort near Burghclere which offers sweeping panoramas across Hampshire. Take in the extensive views over the North Wessex Downs and Highclere Castle, the home of Downtown Abbey.

It’s one short steep climb up, but the views are worth it! You could visit in the early morning for sunrise, but our favourite time is at sunset for dramatic skies and endless far-reaching views. We love visiting when the evening light is beginning to soften with a ‘picky tea’ and blanket, perfect for unforgettable golden-hour photographs. Top tip, don’t forget to bring a torch and perhaps a jumper.

3.    A colourful Autumn at The Yard

Who doesn't love an autumn walk? Crisp leaves, colourful landscapes and low golden sun. Even better when the walk can start or finish with a trip to The Yard. Nestled in the Candover Valley. Head to this laid-back café and events space to capture shots of the beautiful countryside location, where the light-filled indoor spaces with rustic seating are served with colourful dishes and local coffee. On colder days, keep warm by the fire. From book launches to live music, wine tastings, chef demos and supper clubs, there’s a whole host of events happening at The Yard too! We love this spot for autumn colours, foodie shots and memorable catch-ups with family and friends.

On site at Chilton Manor Farm, you will also find the Wild Sauna for a sauna session and cold plunge, the buried church of St Nicholas and the poetry trail to explore and enjoy all year around.

4.    Winter at Bombay Sapphire Distillery

Discover the artistry behind Bombay Sapphire gin at the Bombay Sapphire Distillery, Laverstoke Mill. It’s a haven for shots any time of year but in winter the distillery takes on a different character: expect illuminated glasshouses, winter lights and riverside reflections.

The bookable tours and experiences provide plenty of opportunities for close-up shots of botanicals, ingredients and glassware. A large portion of the tours take place indoors, including the cinema room, botanical rooms and exhibits however you do step outside to walk between buildings and to view the iconic glasshouses so take some layers with you. Alongside experiences, keep an eye on their website for seasonal events including cinema nights, afternoon tea and Christmas parties.

5.    Discover every season at The Vyne

Whatever the season, there's always something beautiful to discover and take photos of at The Vyne, a National Trust property, as the historic estate constantly transforms. Spring brings colourful bulbs and blossom, while summer sees the formal gardens bursting with vibrant borders and wildflowers. Autumn paints the estate in rich shades of gold and copper, then winter reveals frosty landscapes and a misty lakeside.

No two visits ever feel the same with different activities and events taking place throughout the year. One month you may find yourself photographing reflections on a still lake, the next you're wandering through carpets of fallen leaves or admiring the first signs of spring. Perfect for all year-round exploring, family days out, a walk with friends and seasonal photography.
