Veganuary: Taking part in Basingstoke and Deane

Have you heard of Veganuary and thinking of taking part? Or perhaps you’ve already made the decision to embark on a vegan journey and looking for ideas to get prepared ahead of 1 January? Either way, we’re here to help with some ideas of places locally to shop and eat.

So, first thing’s first, what is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a non-profit organisation encouraging and supporting people worldwide to try vegan for 31 days in January, and beyond. Their website is full of useful resources, recipes and blogs to get you started.

The Vegan Society website also has more helpful tools to get you started, including a meal planning guide to help plan ahead with a nutrition overview plan and meal plan checklist.

Getting started

So, you’ve made the decision to start and could do with some help finding places to shop and eat Vegan this January. This is where our handy guide comes in.

Vegan eating in or takeaway options in Basingstoke and Deane

You’ll find plenty of choice locally to enjoy eating out during Veganuary. Vemillion (pictured) located in Chineham Shopping Centre is Basingstoke’s first 100% vegan café offering an extensive menu packed with options for breakfast, brunch, lunch or afternoon coffee and cake to eat in or takeaway. The Parlour Tea Room located in Viables Craft Centre and Tea Barn in Worting Road offer a vegan menu, including afternoon tea! Other café’s with vegan options include The Yard, Kudos Coffee and Willows Coffee House.

If you’re looking for a meal out then you’ll find lots of vegan menu options in Basingstoke town centre including independent restaurants such as Afrizi offering Nigerian classic dishes and Elai and Chennai Express for South Indian cuisine including Vegan curries and dosas. The Lime Leaf offers vegan Thai options or for a Turkish and Mediterranean menu, The Olive House has vegan dishes including Guvec, Saksuka and Imam Bayildi.

In Festival Place, you’ll find many restaurants offer vegan options on their menus, such as Nandos, Wagamama, ASK Italian and BrewDog Basingstoke and you can enjoy a vegan milkshake at Shakeaway who offer vegan alternatives

Shopping for vegan food, drinks and toiletries in Basingstoke and Deane

Triple O Packaging (TOP) is a zero-waste refill business in Basingstoke. They offer vegan beauty and personal products, cleaning products and some food refills. Online delivery is available directly to homes and businesses within seven miles of Basingstoke, including Chineham, Bramley, Sherfield-on-Loddon, Hook, Upton Grey, Dummer, Oakley and Tadley. You will also find TOP at regular pop-up stalls around Basingstoke with their ethically sourced household products (don’t forget your own container!) These are at Basingstoke Market, Silchester Village Market, Portsmouth Arms Community Market and Greener Kingsclere.

The Village Refillery in Overton is a refill and zero waste shop offering a wide range of foods, cleaning and personal care products such as Miniml Refills, a brand which is vegan, cruelty free and 100% biodegradable.

In Festival Place you will find vegan snacks, meat alternatives and some pantry staples available at Holland and Barrett and Grape Tree Feel Good Foods. Head to Lush and the Body Shop for a large selection of vegan beauty and personal products from bath bombs and body lotions to make-up and shampoo – online ordering also available.

Many of the larger local supermarkets, such as Aldi, ASDA, Lidl, Marks and Spencer, Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose either offer their own vegan ranges or sell vegan brands too. To help when shopping look out for the Vegan Society Trademark to confirm vegan-certified items, it’s product search is sorted by brand name.
