Barry Smith, Chair of Basingstoke Chamber of Commerce

As Chair of Basingstoke Chamber of Commerce, I see first-hand the vital role that culture and creativity already play in our local economy. The creative industries sector in Basingstoke and Deane accounts for approximately 8.1% of total local employment, supporting around 7,000 jobs across arts, entertainment and recreation, and encompassing some 800 creative businesses from independent designers and performers to larger organisations such as Anvil Arts.

Basingstoke represents 11% of all creative industry businesses and 15% of creative jobs across Hampshire, underlining the town’s importance as a cultural and economic driver within the county.

Becoming a Town of Culture would be a powerful catalyst for further growth boosting footfall, strengthening the town’s profile, and creating new opportunities for collaboration between creative organisations, retailers, hospitality and the wider business community.

This kind of cultural investment builds capacity not only for economic success, but for healthier, more resilient communities. Culture plays a proven role in supporting mental wellbeing, reducing isolation and creating inclusive opportunities particularly for young people and those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Having lived and worked in Basingstoke all my life, I know what makes this town special. We have a strong cultural foundation, defined by the energy, diversity and commitment of our community. Town of Culture status would allow us to unlock culture’s full potential  enriching lives, strengthening economic confidence, and creating a more connected and prosperous future for businesses and residents alike.
