Basingstoke Radio
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire volunteer collective at Basingstoke Radio, I am expressing our unwavering and enthusiastic endorsement of the Basingstoke Town of Culture bid. Having served as a central pillar of the local media and cultural landscape for the past seven years, we recognise this initiative as a monumental catalyst for social, economic, and creative growth within our borough.
Who we are: a community-driven powerhouse
Basingstoke Radio is more than a broadcaster; we are a community-centric ecosystem. As a volunteer-run and managed station, our operations are fueled by the passion of a highly motivated team, ranging from seasoned presenters and technical engineers to grassroots event coordinators. For nearly a decade, we have acted as a digital town square, providing a vital platform for local voices, fostering civic pride, and bridging the gap between diverse community groups.
Strategic advantage: unrivaled outside broadcast capabilities
We believe Basingstoke Radio is the most strategically positioned partner to facilitate the delivery of the Town of Culture programme. Our unique infrastructure allows us to transcend the traditional studio setting, bringing the cultural experience directly to the doorsteps of our residents.
We operate the only dedicated Outside Broadcast (OB) vehicle in the borough, a mobile asset that provides a level of engagement and visibility unmatched by any other local outlet. Key features of this facility include:
- Full station branding: A professional, high-visibility presence that serves as a focal point for public gatherings, generating instant brand recognition and atmospheric excitement.
- Self-powered mobile studio: A fully autonomous, state-of-the-art broadcasting suite. This independence allows us to transmit high-quality content from any location—be it a rural village green or a bustling urban center—without relying on external infrastructure.
- Small performance stage: The vehicle features a stage area, making it a "pop-up" venue capable of hosting live acoustic sets, spoken word performances, and public Q&A sessions.
A proven track record of civic engagement
Our commitment to Basingstoke’s cultural identity is evidenced by our historical involvement in the town’s flagship events. We do not merely report on culture; we actively facilitate it through technical production, promotional advocacy, and live participation. Notable partnerships include:
- The Festival of Transport: Providing the logistical soundtrack and live commentary for one of the region’s largest public heritage gatherings.
- Basingstoke Mayor’s Christmas Carol Service: In 2025, we successfully broadcast the Mayor’s Christmas service for the first time.
- Basingstoke Pride: Serving as a vocal ally for diversity and inclusion by providing high-energy coverage and a safe space for marginalised voices.
- Grassroots and community events: From neighborhood fetes to large-scale charity fundraisers, we provide professional-grade media support to ensure local initiatives achieve maximum impact and reach.
Our vision for the "Town of Culture" success
If Basingstoke is successful in its bid, Basingstoke Radio pledges to serve as the "Roving Cultural Hub" for the year-long celebration. We commit our mobile studio, our airtime, and our volunteer network to ensure the Town of Culture is not confined to static venues.
Our pledge: We will document the journey of this bid through live broadcasts from art installations, real-time interviews with performers, and interactive workshops in every corner of the borough. Our goal is to democratize access to the arts, ensuring that every resident - regardless of their location or background - feels a profound sense of ownership and participation in this transformative project.
We wholeheartedly endorse this bid. We are ready to deploy our resources to showcase Basingstoke as a premier destination for innovation, creativity, and community spirit.
