Becky Kitter's story
Having lived in London for over 10 years, I can genuinely say that moving to Basingstoke was the best decision I’ve ever made. London offers a wealth of cultural opportunities, but its sheer size and spread mean that accessing them often requires significant planning and travel. In contrast, Basingstoke’s compactness makes culture accessible in a way that feels immediate and personal. Here, you don’t need to spend hours on public transport to see a show or visit an exhibition - you can simply walk into the theatre or museum and be part of the experience.
What truly sets Basingstoke apart is the way culture is woven into the fabric of everyday life. The Willis Museum stands as a central stone in our town, offering exhibitions, events, and a sense of shared history right in the heart of the community. Milestones Museum is another gem, bringing local history to life and providing interactive, immersive experiences for people of all ages. These venues aren’t just places to visit; they’re gathering points and destinations that build connection and pride among residents.
Basingstoke’s cultural scene is vibrant, diverse, and welcoming. From local theatre productions and art exhibitions to music festivals and community events, there is always something happening that brings people together. The town’s size makes these experiences accessible to everyone - families, young people, and older residents alike. You can pop into the theatre after work, bring your children to a museum on the weekend, or stumble upon a festival in the town centre. This level of accessibility is rare and precious.
Moreover, Basingstoke has supported us as artists for over 12 years, consistently showing appreciation and respect for its creative community. This ongoing encouragement is more than just words - it’s reflected in the opportunities, resources, and platforms available to local artists. The town values its artists, recognising the vital role they play in shaping cultural life and bringing people together. This support has allowed us to grow, experiment, and contribute meaningfully to the town’s cultural landscape. Whether through exhibitions, performances, or community projects, Basingstoke ensures that creative voices are heard and celebrated. This culture of respect and encouragement is a key reason why Basingstoke deserves to be recognised as a Town of Culture - it’s a place where artists are not only welcomed, but genuinely valued.
