Jacky's story

At the age of three, I moved to Basingstoke with my family as part of the London overspill.

I grew up in a large council estate in Basingstoke and always had a passion for art. In my teens I knew more over that my future was with the arts and to be creative.

I went to college and university and I was one of only a few young people in my area to do so. My parents fully supported me and enabled me to pursue my dream to work within the creative sector.

I had several jobs when I left university and was self employed for a short time. One day someone mentioned to me that I could teach others art. I realised I wanted to give back what I had been fortunate enough to have and enjoy myself and so my teaching journey began.

I’ve never looked back and feel fortunate every day that I can make some difference to people's lives and help them to enjoy art. Art for wellbeing is so important and vital to our health and learning to relax in this ever changing and challenging world we live in, has never felt or been so vital and important.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Festival Place have given me some amazing opportunities to work alongside my art colleagues, the community and local organisations, to make a real impact. From teaching to undertaking public arts projects and engaging with different ages, abilities and backgrounds, it has given me a sense of wellbeing and fulfilment as an artist and educator, but more importantly as someone grateful for everything I’ve been given and opportunity to give back and continue to share art with others, both now and in the future.

A BIG thank you to Basingstoke and all you have given to me and to others.
