Business Spotlight: Silchester Farm
From pig farm to countryside destination
What began as a humble pig farm has evolved into one of the region's most distinctive countryside venues.
In 2018, Al and Carla Winsey took on the estate with a vision to breathe new life into the site, transforming it into the Silchester Farm visitors know today. While the business initially focused on weddings, it has since grown into a multi-purpose destination hosting corporate retreats, private celebrations, overnight stays and multi-day wedding experiences.
Today, guests can stay in historic farm buildings or the estate's unique Pyggies accommodation, while enjoying exceptional food created by the in-house culinary team using seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.
Growth built on hospitality
At the heart of Silchester Farm's success is a commitment to creating memorable experiences. The team explain:
This dedication has helped establish the farm as a destination that attracts visitors from across the South East while maintaining its strong local roots.
Proud to be part of the local community
The team value their connection to the local community and actively participate in local markets, networking events and business initiatives. The location also provides the perfect balance of rural surroundings with excellent connectivity to Basingstoke, Reading and London.
As the team put it: "Being based in Basingstoke and Deane gives us a strong connection to the local community, which is something we really value at Silchester Farm."
The business also works closely with local suppliers, businesses and talent, helping to support the wider local economy while showcasing the area to visitors from further afield.
A year of recognition
The last year has brought significant achievements for the business, including national and regional award recognition.
The team were particularly proud to be featured in Tatler and to receive nominations and finalist places in several prestigious industry awards, including the Wedding Industry Awards, Inspire Business Awards, Guides for Brides Awards and Muddy Stilettos Awards.
Closer to home, they’ve also celebrated an important milestone for Trough Farm Shop, which has now been open for two years. “What started as an additional part of the farm has grown into a much-loved destination for our local community, bringing together great food, local produce and people.”
Giving back
Giving back is also an important part of the business's values. This year, Silchester Farm has chosen Marie Curie and Parkinson's UK as its nominated charities and continues to support local initiatives, suppliers and community events.
Looking ahead, the team remain focused on ensuring their growth benefits the wider community:
"As our business continues to grow, we want to make sure that growth has a positive impact beyond the estate too – supporting local businesses, celebrating the community around us and giving back where we can."
Through its combination of hospitality, community involvement and continual investment, Silchester Farm is demonstrating how a rural business can evolve while remaining firmly connected to the place and people that helped it grow.
